What's Working For Me

Design Process, new product

  • Inventory what is known of business needs.
  • Discuss “jobs to be done” with stakeholders.
  • Heuristic evaluation of existing or similar tools.
  • Look for existing research.
  • Create concept wire frame.
  • User test with wire frame to get a sense of user appetite and other features that may be of interest.
  • Revise design, retest as needed.
  • Deliver high fidelity designs, prioritization development order and recommendations

Design Process, existing product

Brief outline of the latest work process that has been effective for me when faced with a design or redesign challenge.

  • Examine qualitative data such as drop off rates to see where flow is breaking down.
  • Conduct preliminary qualitative testing on existing flow to determine exact nature of breakdown and to rule out items that are satisfying user needs.
  • Conduct a heuristic evaluation
  • Discuss “jobs to be done” with stakeholders.
  • Redesign page or flow
  • Discuss redesign with front and back end developers to ensure design ideas can be executed. Get their thoughts because they see the world in a different way.
  • Test idea with users as a high fidelity prototype and iterate as necessary
  • Reach out for high fidelity visual design and copy
  • Deliver prototype, design and copy to development team.

Team Workflow

While in my current position I have worked closely with product owners, development teams and other designers to create a process within agile that greatly reduced miscommunication and errors. This method has become a company-wide standard for an agile workflow that satisfies the development cycle and incorporates user centered design.

  • Story created by product owner.
  • Preliminary wire frame created. If necessary, testing on a current flow is done.
  • wire frame reviewed with product owner, front and back end developers, data services, and visual designers. All parties comment on feasibility of design. Possible accessibility or brand compatibility issues are discussed.
  • wire frame is reworked and reviewed again as necessary.
  • Test design with users as a low or high fidelity prototype. Iterate and re-test as necessary
  • Create a copy of story in kan ban for visual designer and copy writer.
  • Visual designer creates high fidelity composition of page to match corporate layout standards. Comps exported to Sympli.
  • Copy written according to company standards and submitted for corporate review
  • Review completed design comp and copy with product owner. Product owner then has the prototype, design comps and copy files ready to include in stories for developers.
  • Review design deliverables with development as they begin work on stories.
  • After developers complete their stories on the new design, it is then demonstrated to the design team to ensure correct execution.

Stuff I Say

I don't have to be a genius

I don't have to be the smartest or most creative person in the room. I do not have a fiefdom over all things design on my team. Absolutely everyone has design ideas. My role is to check these ideas against good design and usability principles. I am in the room to be radically open and to synthesize the chemistry of collaboration into an effective design.
